Spring is my favorite time of year. Everything that was brown and dull suddenly comes back to life. The bright colors and smells of blooms awaken the senses after the winter’s sleep. People spend more time outside of their houses and spread their arms to welcome the warmth of sunshine. The whole world recolors itself and draws us outside to rejoice and marvel in its beauty.
Spring reminds us that longer and warmer days are ahead, and it’s time to plant seeds that will feed us or provide beautiful blooms later. I miss having a flower garden and watching it come to life. The first blooms of spring come out and add color to the world. Nothing heralds spring like tulips, pansies, daffodils, hyacinth, and crocus.
My grandmother had a rose and iris garden in her yard. They were so lovely! Sometimes she cut a rose for me to wear on my dress to church. I wanted a rose garden like hers but never had the skill, space, or soil to grow them very well. Where we live now there are so many deer that any flower plant around our house is nothing but deer fodder.
When our kids were small, I had big gardens where I’d plant tomatoes, beans, corn, onions, peppers, and cucumbers. The food I raised was canned, frozen, pickled, or grazed on while walking through the plants. I miss the fresh product, especially the homegrown tomatoes. Nothing is better than tomatoes from my garden. I stopped having such big gardens when my kids said they liked storebought veggies better than my canned ones. A smaller garden was less work, but to this day, I miss having a place to raise tomatoes and onions. Enjoy your spring! I hope it is colorful, warm, and wonderful wherever you are!
In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening withhold not your hand: for you know not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good. Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun…. Ecclesiastes 11:5-6
