Heartwarming Small-Town Romances and Thrilling Mysteries

It’s time for Hubby and me to move back north for the summer. The days in Texas will start getting too hot for me to function well, and the cool evenings in South Dakota will let me sit outside to think and daydream and the days are longer. Plus, we’ve never had to go through three tornado warnings and sirens blaring in SD. Putting a couple of states between us and Tornado Alley will help me sleep better at night.

Packing to move twice a year gets harder and harder. I thought I brought less this year, but I forgot I have the bad habit of shopping. The suitcase is harder to close than when we came. I need to remember not to pack as much next fall because the Texas stores will have good stuff I’ll want to buy (supporting the local economy and all). Why is it you always find cute clothes when you travel and not so much when you’re at home?

It’s always hard to leave one place for the other. We leave our wonderful summer SD friends in the fall, but we get to see our winter friends in TX. Then in the spring, our winter friends hate to tell us good-bye, but our summer friends are excited to see us. The best thing is we have good friends in both places that we love to be with, and that’s a huge blessing we’re infinitely grateful for.

I miss all the Texas restaurants during the summers. They have the best catfish place (Catfish Corner in Abilene), the best donut shop (AM Donuts in Baird), best BBQ places (Dyers and Nine Line BBQ in Amarillo), the best hamburgers (Whataburger), the best Mexican food (Hubby’s fave, Tacos Garcia in Amarillo), the best Italian food (Fazioli’s in Amarillo), and all the Panda Expresses. I look forward to eating at all those places when we return this fall. I also take recommendations on other places with good food. I’ll likely lose weight while in Rapid City. Not nearly as many restaurants there as in Amarillo.

Until next fall, so long, Texas. Here we come, South Dakota. I’m privileged and blessed to call both of you home.

  1. Might I suggest a few restaurants that have popped up in Custer since you last lived here, and we are a short drive from RC. The well-advertised BH Burgers & Bun is now BH Burgers & Pizza, but is still yummy. The Custer Wolf with their inventive and tasty foods is attached to the very memorable Walk in the Woods shopping experience, so you could complete two tasks at one stop. The longtime popular Sage Creek Grille is under new ownership & promises to be equally tasteful. Maria’s Mexican is a wonderfully yummy experience in authentic Mexican cuisine & they are newly located on Custer’s west edge at the firmer Dakota Ciwbiy Restaurant. Skogen Kitchen awaits you for a delightful evening meal prepared by a James Beard nominated chef and his equally talented team of sous chefs. Fine dining it alive in Custer.
